EmSightSDM makes monitoring easier at Stora Enso’s mill

Stora Enso is a global provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions and paper. The Lahti mill of the company’s Packaging Solutions division produces fiber-based, corrugated cardboard packaging products for a wide range of customers. Renewable, high-end and innovative solutions create added value for customers in retail trade, e-commerce, industry, transport and sales promotion, for instance.

Empower has had a maintenance agreement with the mill for a long time. In addition, we installed two EmSightSDM systems based on sensor technology at the mill in 2018. The intelligent product, developed by us for the measurement and optimization of production conditions, collects data with wireless sensors. Through a base station and cloud service, data is transferred in real time to a mobile application for employees and supervisors to monitor, and to a data system for potential further analysis.

At first, we installed sensors in one operation-critical fan. If the fan were damaged, it would negatively affect the entire production process. The sensors measure the vibrations of the fan’s drive axle. In this manner, a sufficiently vibration-free environment can be secured and it can be ensured that the fan operates smoothly and that defects can be avoided. Accurate data collection also helps to optimize maintenance intervals and ensure uninterrupted production.

We tested the capability of the sensors to count the number of products produced at the mill. We also experimented with sensors installed in the binding machine of the packing station to measure pallets of semi-finished corrugated cardboard. The experiment went well – sensor data proved its usefulness in a measurement like this, too.

In addition, we installed a dedicated sensor system to measure the temperature and air humidity in the intermediary product storage room at the mill. Humidity is a critical factor in the intermediary storage of corrugated cardboard as it causes the cardboard to curl and complicates its further processing.

Roope Laaksonen, Production Manager at Stora Enso, is satisfied with the cooperation with Empower and the opportunities offered by the installed EmSightSDM systems.

"The system has proven to be particularly useful when measurements made it possible to trace deficiencies and to detect a malfunction in air humidifier equipment. The data collected by the sensors enables us to monitor warehouse humidity easily and to react to potential deviations in production conditions quickly," says Laaksonen.
